Who is Barbara Holmes ???.....
Barbara Holmes - 63 years old and local Lytham legend , has recently qualified for the 2022 IronMan world Championships in Kona Hawaii
This amazing achievement is the icing on the cake to a truly formidable few years for Barbara in the world of endurance sports, including sprint , standard and Long distance triathlon - Barbara is the Current World Champion for her age group in Sprint Distance and has now challenged herself with Iron Distance
In her first race at this distance - Barbara WON her age group racing Iron Man Majorca - which included a 2.4 mile swim , 112 mile bike ride then a 26.2 mile marathon !!
At any age this is no mean feat , however at 63 years old Barbara is keeping up with, and beating women many years younger than her.
In her own words....
"I hadn’t believed I was capable at longer distance but won my age group in Mallorca Ironman this year and so won my spot to Kona which is the holy grail of triathlon. I felt the opportunity was too great to pass up!" Barbara Holmes
Obviously getting to Kona in Hawaii is very expensive with flights, hotels and food. At Apex we believe everyone should follow their sporting dreams and we saw Barbara on social media raising funds to get her to Kona and race on October 6th.
